This Evaluation Study of the Historic Fortifications of the Gulf Islands National Seashore was made at the request of the Southeast Regional Team. The principle purpose of this study is to determine a course of action by which the deterioration of these important historic fortifications may be halted. Restoration work at this time is secondary, although certain areas are proposed for partial restoration to provide a more meaningful visitor experience. Since deactivation of these buildings by the army the effects of time, semi-tropical climate, vandalism and the lack of adequate maintenance have brought the masonry structures to a serious state of deterioration. The concrete batteries of the 1898 period have fared much better.
