This project involves the preservation and development of the Butterfield Stage Station, known historically as the Pinery. It is located in Culberson County, Texas , township 1, block 65, section 44. It is now situated within the boundaries of Guadalupe Mountains National Park, some fifty miles southeast of Carlsbad, New Mexico. The Finery is now in a state of ruins. Only the north wall of the main enclosure remains in any sort of substantial condition, and it is in imminent danger of collapse. About half of the wall is listing at about a 10 degree angle. A substantial portion of the west end of this wall has collapsed since acquisition by the National Park Service. Remains of other portions of the structure are in evidence, such as a portion of the corral to the north of the main structure, which is evidenced by stone rubble along the wall line. The remaining standing wall will be preserved by plumbing the leaning portion and by repointing the entire wall with stabilized soil, although care will be taken as best as possible to retain the deteriorated appearance of the wall. The recently collapsed portion of the wall will be reconstructed to its appearance in plate 4 . Archeological investigations will be made for the purpose of locating the now-obliterated. major features of the structure. These will be indicated in an appropriate manner to enhance the interpretation of the structure, but no other reconstruction is anticipated.
