An Historic Structure Preservation Guide, often known as an HSPG, is a systematic procedure to assist park maintenance managers in planning and directing preservation maintenance on historic or prehistoric structures. Although similar in intent as the NPS Maintenance Management Program, the HSPG is more comprehensive in detail since historic and prehistoric structures have preservation mandates and unique maintenance problems requiring more extensive management control and monitoring, The HSPG was designed to integrate with the Maintenance Management Program by the unloading data and summary information. The purpose of the guide is to: provide a clear, simple system which can be understood and used by those responsible for the preservation and maintenance of cultural resources; define and detail all building elements; prioritize and identify what must be maintained; define the physical condition of the structure on a periodic basis; establish a comprehensive scheduled routine, preventive and cyclic work activity list; prepare a workable annual work program for the historic structures which reflect maintenance needs, preservation priorities, and human and financial resources; track and record all maintenance activities; and clarify maintenance responsibilities on cultural resources.
