During the very warm, dry summer of 1977, several large tundra wildfires occurred in northwest Alaska, including the 258,000 acre Kugruk Hi fire in Bering Land Bridge National Preserve. A set of eight permanent monitoring plots were established in 1978 by Chuck Racine (and colleagues). The site was first sampled in 1973 before the fire. The plots have been remeasured one year post-fire in 1978, followed by sampling in 1979, 1980, 1983, 2001, 2009 and 2019 at 42 years post-fire.
