Harpers Ferry National Historical Park preserves historic resources and commemorates the historic events that occurred at and around Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. The park consists of portions of the Lower Town, the former Storer College campus, landscapes associated with the national historical park’s Civil War significance, and lands preserving the historic viewshed down the Potomac River. This historic building site survey report details the history of the area known as Lots No. 1 to 7, Block D, Shenandoah Street, in the Lower Town area of Harpers Ferry. The area is bounded on the east by Bridge Street, on the north by Shenandoah Street, on the west by Tell Street, and on the south by Hamilton Street and the Shenandoah River. Purchased by the United States government in 1796 for the purpose of establishing a federal armory at Harpers Ferry, the block remained the property of the government until 1852, when the seven lots were sold at private and public auctions, and granted to the church as well. The ownership of each lot in Block E from 1852-1865 is treated in the individual study of each tract that follows.
