Harpers Ferry National Historical Park preserves historic resources and commemorates the historic events that occurred at and around Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. The park consists of portions of the Lower Town, the former Storer College campus, landscapes associated with the national historical park’s Civil War significance, and lands preserving the historic viewshed down the Potomac River. This historic structure report concerns the Susan Downey House (Bldg. 15) in the Lower Town area of Harpers Ferry. The exterior, interior, and grounds of the house are being restored to their appearance circa 1870. The main part of the building will house interpretation of Harpers Ferry's involvement in the Civil War with emphasis placed on the life of the ordinary soldier. The ell, which is of an earlier date than the main building, was probably an out building used as a kitchen for the Harpers Ferry Hotel. It will be interpreted as such. The entire structure will be maintained and managed by Harpers Ferry National Historical Park.
