Harpers Ferry National Historical Park preserves historic resources and commemorates the historic events that occurred at and around Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. The park consists of portions of the Lower Town, the former Storer College campus, landscapes associated with the national historical park’s Civil War significance, and lands preserving the historic viewshed down the Potomac River. This historic structure report concerns the Tearney Building (Bldg. 38) in the Lower Town area of Harpers Ferry. Building no. 38 is named after Edward Tearney, who, along with Peter Lytle and Patrick Kelly, constructed it in 1844. The exterior of the building is to be restored to its initial appearance. Alterations over the years have concealed much of the building's original character and design, particularly at the first-floor level. From 1844 to about 1860 building no. 38 was symmetrical and was divided in half at the first floor by center alley. The proposed restoration will re-create this appearance.
