Harpers Ferry National Historical Park preserves historic resources and commemorates the historic events that occurred at and around Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. The park consists of portions of the Lower Town, the former Storer College campus, landscapes associated with the national historical park’s Civil War significance, and lands preserving the historic viewshed down the Potomac River. The purpose of this report is to bring together and present all documentary evidence, including maps, plans, and photographs relating to the physical history of the U.S. Musket Factory canal and dams on the Potomac River from 1799 to 1884. The Old (ca. 1828-61) and New (1859-60) U.S. Potomac Dams and the western portion of the U.S. Armory Canal (from the power house west to the Potomac Dam) are still extant and in use. The eastern portion of the Armory Canal, from the power house east to the eastern or lower end of the Musket Factory, lays under about 14 feet of fill that was placed on the canal ca. 1892 so that the main tracks west of the B. &. O. Railroad could be relocated on top of this embankment. The eastern portion of this old canal probably lies intact under the 1892 embankment.
