Hampton National Historic Site preserves the Hampton Mansion, once possibly the largest private home in America and grand example of late-Georgian architecture in America. Hampton is also the story of its people, as the estate evolved through the actions of the Ridgely family, enslaved African Americans, European indentured servants, and paid laborers within a nation struggling to define its own concept of freedom. This Historic Structures Report concerns the Hampton Mansion. Built during the period 1783-90, Hampton Mansion is one of the great post-Revolution mansions of America. Spacious in size and symmetrical in design, the mansion has those qualities of formal charm and elegance typical of the late Georgian style of architecture. It is maintained and interpreted as an historic house exhibit to represent the style of architecture and way of life enjoyed by early 19th-century landed gentry. The stucco on the exterior walls of Hampton Mansion is in very poor condition with a number of exposed stone areas and many cracks. To correct a continuous maintenance problem and restore the mansion to its original appearance it is proposed that the existing stucco be completely removed. The new plastering should match the original in color, pattern and texture. Small areas of stucco may be removed to determine the type of plastering originally used. Also included in the scope of the construction is the repair or replacement of defective gutters, downspouts and exterior woodwork
