Beginning in fall 2014, as a class exercise environmental science students from the Nauset Regional High School (Eastham, MA) have deployed oysters along salinity gradients within the diked Herring River and Mayo Creek estuaries (Wellfleet MA) to assess the effects of artificial salinity reduction on oyster growth and survival. As expected, growth and survival decreased with decreasing salinity. The study is repeated each year under the supervision of Nauset High School teacher Lucas Simpson.
