Hot Springs National Park was once known as Hot Springs Reservation. It was set aside in 1832 to protect the Park's primary resource, the hot springs.This type of Reservation was an early version of the National Park idea.Hot Springs was actually the first area in the United States to be set aside for its natural features.After Yellowstone was formed in 1872, Hot Springs was managed with it. In 1916 the National Park Service was formed and in 1921, Hot Springs Reservation changed its name to Hot Springs National Park, making it the 18th National Park in the Service. This Historic Structure Preservation Guide (HSPG) is a system to assist in the preservation through maintenance of the historic Superior Bathhouse. It is also a system to assist in the enjoyment of the visitors or customers and of the building's usefulness for the lessee. The initial section, the Background, includes the preface, introduction, and instructions for the use of the guide. Inspection checklists are included here to provide the reader with additional information and insights into the level of maintenance at which the Maurice Bathhouse should be maintained. The inspection checklists will also be the basis of the annual inspection report. The inspection checklists can also be used for inspections conducted on a more regular basis or in any other way which might assist in maintenance. Following the inspection portion is a list of preventive maintenance tasks descriptions and a suggested schedule for those tasks. The section on preservation treatments includes task lists, specification divisions, task information, and the actual maintenance specifications. Several specifications are included as examples but the main body of this part will require completion after the Superior has been rehabilitated.
