The purpose of this paint analysis is to determine the original exterior painting scheme of the Boss Bakery (Bldg. 25e) when it was remodeled to its present condition for the purpose of recommending colors for repainting. The building is located in Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, Skagway, Alaska. It is recommended that the storefront area, including the middle cornice on the front facade, be completely stripped of paint and finished with a varnish to protect the wood. This should be a gloss finish. The false front and south facade siding, excluding windows, should be painted a light green color. This color was matched to the Munsell Color Notation System 10Y 7/2 and to Benjamin Moore color OT-39. This should be a semi-gloss finish. The window on the south facade (not covered by siding) may be finished in a manner similar to the storefront for continuity, or painted white. It is further recommended that prior to repainting of the false front, a test area be uncovered with paint remover to determine if an earlier painted sign existed in this location. This can be accomplished by using a wide putty knife, commercial paint remover, and by removing the paint layer by layer. A test area of long narrow narrow dimensions is recommended for best results. If evidence of an earlier sign is found, consideration should be given to uncovering the complete design.
