The objective of this paint analysis is to determine the earliest exterior painting scheme of the Steamship Office (Bldg. 36G) located in Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, Skagway, Alaska, for the purpose of recommending historically accurate colors for repainting. The earliest paint layers in both paint samples #1 and #2 from Building 36G were observed to be a light gray color. It is not possible, however, to determine with any accuracy what time period this layer represents. This layer may be the earliest (c. 1898) finish (assuming the building had been originally painted), or it may be a later finish, having been removed from a remodeled area or an area in which the earliest paint layers had been mechanically removed. The relative date of this gray layer could be more accurately determined if comparisons were made between the chromochronologies of paint samples taken from a number of recorded locations on the building. In addition, examination of a large number of paint samples is important in identifying a polychromatic painting scheme. A historically accurate exterior painting scheme, therefore, cannot be recommended unless additional paint samples are examined from Building 36G. While it is understood that only two paint samples were removed due to lack of paint on the building, it might be possible to obtain paint samples from protected areas such as crevices and mouldings.
