This cyclical maintenance manual concerns the Superintendent's Lodge at Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument (formerly Custer Battlefield National Cemetery). Building materials are continually In a process of change. Wood and paint oils deteriorate, returning to the earth to nourish plant materials. Stone and mortar wear away by abrasion and by freezing and thawing, becoming dust and dirt. Preservation Maintenance does hold back deterioration, but it cannot be eliminated. High quality maintenance retards deterioration so that more of the visiting public can experience a part of our national heritage, the Superintendent's Lodge at the Custer Battlefield National Cemetery. Cyclical maintenance functions are divided into two broad categories entitled Routine Maintenance, and Periodic Maintenance. By defining what is to be accomplished in each of the maintenance tasks, it is hoped that a uniform protection of all building surfaces can be achieved. Tasks will then be scheduled on a guaranteed routine basis, eliminating unnecessary repainting, for example, which should be done on the basis of the finish being worn. Without guidance it is sometimes the tendency of maintenance personnel to overemphasize some areas and completely neglect others. It is hoped that the schedules will increase and maintain a uniform level of treatments which will reduce the wear of the building fabric to a minimum. The frequency should be changed by the supervisory personnel when the recommended cycle of maintenance does not produce satisfactory results, or when necessary, expand the schedule cycle from time to time to reflect the experience at the Superintendent's Lodge.
