Summary Report of Phase I of a Cultural Resources Inventory within Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve. Investigations occurred in the upper Kobuk River area, from the river's headwaters to the river's lower canyon, and included areas adjacent to the river, such as Walker Lake, Nutuvukti Lake, Selby and Narvak lakes, and the mid portion of the Reed River. The purpose of this field work was to locate, identify, define, enumerate, and document historic and prehistoric cultural sites. The project was conducted over 11 uninterrupted weeks in the summer of 1983 by a crew of four professional archaeologists. Crew members discovered approximately 10 historic sites and 214 prehistoric sites during this effort.
