Lake Valley, a once booming silver mining town, is partially located on public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management. In 1992, the Bureau of Land Management and the National Park Service entered into an interagency agreement by which the Southwest Regional Office, Division of Conservation would develop stabilization documents and the associated cost estimates for repair to the Chapel and Schoolhouse. Lake Valley and its structures are considered a cultural resource and therefore any maintenance or development of the structure and its surrounds should fallow the "Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation." Based on these standards, this document provides specific guidelines and treatment recommendations for the stabilization and preservation of the Lake Valley Schoolhouse and Chapel. All historical information was provided by the Bureau of Land Management and significant portions of the history in this document are taken from the Lake Valley Recordation Project.
