Final Project Report of FY '03 on Public Education: Collection of Oral Histories of Cultural World War II sites on the Island of Weno, Grant no. 64-03-18258

"In the beginning of April 2006, the project starts to implement by the CHPO staff. This part starts from the recruitment process to the implementation stages. And as a result, five informants were identified and recruits as potential individual selected and oriented to the scope of work for the project. The CHPO personnel’s are the key staff for the project. The venue place for the training site is the Chuuk Historic Preservation Office and was arranged in order to acquire the oral histories information when to provide. Other various tasks undertakings different places, such as; Tonoas and Weno. Tonoas is the 4th Japanese Imperial Headquarter during the Japanese era. Historian Mr. Joshua Suka was formally from Tonoas and he was selected as one of the oral historian based on his experience. HPO take trip to some various islands in the lagoon to meet with these historian people for the reason, that some of them are living on the other lagoon islands beside Weno, the center of Chuuk State. One of these islands is Tonoas in which the Japanese used as the 4th Japanese Fleet Headquarter. One of the historians, Mr. Joshua Suka was very wealth in numerous history of Chuuk State, Federated State of Micronesia and he’s been contributing in many previous projects for Chuuk Historic Preservation Office. The eminence of this Project is to and collecting of oral histories indicative of sites from appropriate local historian, village elder and traditional chief. Oral history on these sites will be drawn together from these individuals when permission is given. Subsequently, when permission is granted, it would be set to collect on videotape, tape recorder, and digital camera and for the most part is in writing scripts. The HPO staffs will be the principle leading coordinator during this project in reporting and transcription." Project funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the Chuuk Historic Preservation Office of the Federated State of Micronesia, administered by the Pacific West Regional Office, National Park Service, U.S. Department of Interior (grant number 64-03-18258).
