Distant Pagan
Mariko O and Jordan J. 2008. Distant Pagan. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Historic Preservation Office
"This document was translated from the original Japanese text by Ms Jessica Jordan, University of California, Davis, working under a contract with The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Historic Preservation Office, and with the permission of the author/publisher of the original document, Ms Okamoto Mariko. The contents include memoirs of former residents of Pagan from the years prior to and during World War II. Contributers include men and women, soldiers and civilians. They describe the Japanese settlement on Pagan, the daily activities of adults and children, subsistence, hardships faced during air raids, and the repatriation of soldiers and civilians following the war. This project was undertaken to assist the Historic Preservation Office in its management of the Cultural Resources of the CNMI and to provide information about Pagan to researchers and interested public, many of whom maintain an emotional connection to Pagan Island." Project funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Historic Preservation Office, administered by the Pacific West Regional Office, National Park Service, U.S. Department of Interior (grant number 69-07-21660).
