Kennedy J. 2012. National Register of Historic Places Registration Form: Blunts Point Military Defense Complex. American Samoa Historic Preservation Office, Executive Offices of the Governor; Archaeological Consultants of the Pacific
A National Register of Historic Places Registration Form for the Blunts Point Military Defense Complex Narrative Description summary paragraph: The Blunts Point Military Defense Complex is located on Matauta Ridge which is an upland portion of the Village of Utulei on the island of Tutuila in American Samoa. One site in the complex with multiple associated features. A large cannon is currently on the National Register of Historic Places, is also a National Historic Landmark. It is in excellent shape and the grounds in the immediate vicinity are maintained. However, there are 75 other feature in the complex that have only recently been identified. One feature, another cannon, is in very good shape, and the remaining are in various stages of decomposition. State of Significance summary paragraph: The Blunts Point Military Defense Complex is an excellent candidate for inclusion to the National Register of Historic Places. The reasons for this is that it qualifies under three criteria of significance evaluation (A,C, and D). One feature of the complex is already on the National Register and has been declared a National Historic Landmark. The inclusion of the rest of the features in the complex enhances the appreciation of that feature and places it in proper and complete historical context. There are very few, if any, complexes of this kind that still exist in what was the Pacific Theater of World War II. Project funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the American Samoa Historic Preservation Office, Executive Offices of the Governor, administered by the Pacific West Regional Office, National Park Service, U.S. Department of Interior (60-10-21958).
