"The Ethnographic Reconnaissance Survey & Documentation of Chiefly/Noble Estates of the Seven Ulun Villages project approved and implemented using NPS/HPF FY 10 Grant funds for special project has concluded. Because it was a reconnaissance-based project to identify and locate certain tangible cultural heritage elements of the Yapese culture and history, additional information was gathered as associated with the main theme or focus of the project. In the course of conducting this project, as an initial part of an on-going attempt to document certain cultural/historic elements consisting of both tangible and intangible cultural heritage of Yap State, Federated States of of Micronesia, it became evident that this ethnographic reconnaissance survey begs for further studies and documentation of Yapese culture and history. This booklet gathered oral histories on certain chiefly estates and inter-village or island traditional relationship. Further, it paves the way for the next two (2) much needed projects targeted to be implemented using NPS/HPF FY 12 Grant funds. These projects are the Yap Historic Properties Inventory System Assessment, Phase I, and the Developing a Historic Preservation Plan for Yap State, FSM. Both projects will use some of the information collected from this survey project and so the three (3) projects compliment each other. The collection of the histories were transcribed and translated as being told by informants. There was no attempt to edit these histories. Similar or continuation of projects of this nature is needed in the near future." Project funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the Yap State Historic Preservation Office administered by the Pacific West Regional Office, National Park Service, U.S. Department of Interior (grant number 64-10-21969).
