Preservation Guide, Part I: Boyhood Home Unit

This Historic Resources Preservation Guide has been prepared in compliance with National Park Service Cultural Resources Management Guidelines which require such documents to be prepared in conjunction with restoration work such as these resources have received. The purpose of this document is to provide personnel at Lyndon B. Johnson National Historic Site with an organized system for the continuing maintenance of the buildings and grounds associated with the Boyhood Horae Unit of the park. A similar document is being prepared for the Johnson Settlement Unit, and a third will eventually be prepared for the Birthplace and Ranch area. Every detail of the work involved with the restoration of this resource was carefiilly researched and planned. Considerable effort was expended to achieve exactly the right effect, from the exact color and texture of the paint to the careful matching of the board siding of the barn and shed according to weathering patterns experienced by the north versus the south sides of the buildings. Modem items required by the usage of these resources as a public display have been carefully concealed, or otherwise chosen and located so as to present a minimal visual intrusion on the historic scene. Such items include fire detectors, security alarm equipment, electrical outlets. It is intended that this be a working document, to be actively used by the Park Maintenance Staff for the implementation of appropriate maintenance procedures on the resources. Working copies in loose-leaf form are being supplied to the Park as well as to other appropriate offices. Mailing lists for holders of these loose-leaf documents wiU be maintained (see appendix) and when or if changes occur, new pages will be issued with the date of their issue in the lower lefthand corner. Similarly, if pages become lost or destroyed, replacements can be ordered. These working copies contain paint chips of paint colors and actual samples and materials such as wallpaper, which are difficult and expensive to replace if damaged or lost, and are of little value if discolored or soiled. Partic^llar care of these documents is therefore warranted. A limited number of these documents without actual samples and bound in a more permanent manner are also available for reference and informational purposes.
