Gainesville Mid-Century Design Guidelines
2017. Gainesville Mid-Century Design Guidelines. Bureau of Historic Preservation, Division of Historic Resources, Florida Department of State; Planning Department, City of Gainesville
From the introduction: "To protect the character-defining features of these districts and properties [the five districts and twelve individual buildings that were designated as historically significant from the 1980s to the early 2000s] the City created a historic preservation ordinance, first enacted in 1994, embedded within the local planning process. "The City of Gainesville Historic Preservation Rehabilitation and Design Guidelines" were also created at this time and has not be updated since. ... This update to the 'City of Gainesville Historic Preservation Rehabilitation and Design Guidelines' is intended to help property owners preserve, repair and rehabilitate these newly recognized historic resources of the modern era. The original Guidelines document focused on resources constructed prior to 1940. These updated guidelines are intended for buildings built after 1940. As with the preceding document, these updated guidelines are based on the 'Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties', the federally-recognized benchmark for appropriate treatment of historical resources. The National Historic Preservation Act (1966) is implemented by the federal government through the Department of Interior and administered through the National Park Service. The 'Secretary of the Interior's Standards', in particular the 'Standards for Rehabilitation', act as general guidance for work all historic properties and have been adopted at the federal, state and local levels of government. The intent of the Standards is to encourage the protection and the preservation of historic buildings. The Standards are referenced in the City of Gainesville's Historic Preservation Ordinance (Sec. 30-4.28)." Project funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the Bureau of Historic Preservation, Division of Historic Resources, Florida Department of State, administered by the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grant Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of Interior (grant number P17AF0037).
