Air and water quality in Glacier National Park have been monitored in individual research projects involving park partner’s such as the USGS, researcher’s affiliated with Montana’s university system, by other external researcher’s, by Regional and Washington Office NPS staff, as well as by Glacier National Park physical science staff. Some of these programs are long-running national trend network programs, and by virtue of its undeveloped nature and low local population density, Glacier plays an important role in these networks. Across these national networks and studies, air and water quality in the park generally remains very good. Some areas of concerns exist, including trends in nitrogen and ammonium deposition, as well as the transport and deposition of airborne contaminants from outside the park. Climate warming poses a continued threat as changes in air and/or water temperature drive many ecological and physical processes within the park.
