Harmata and Kurt Alt initiated an eagle leg-banding program in the GYE, including the Park. Their results showed the importance of the Park as an area than enhances survival of young eagles produced throughout the GYE. Moreover, movements of tagged eagles "essentially defined the limits of the GYE, indicating that there is in fact an ecosystem out there..."
