Independence National Historical Park preserves sites associated with the American Revolution and the nation's founding history in and around Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This report attempts to explain the original conditions and physical evolution of the exterior steps, doorways and interior floor levels as they are interrelated to each other and to the adjacent grades and paving around the front and back entrances of Independence Hall. The necessary architectural research entailed considerable investigation in and around the building during the summer and fall of 1965. The work also encompassed excavations in front of the East Wing which were not a part of the main project, but were conducted to record possible underground features in advance of excavation of a below grade mechanical equipment vault. The latter data is included in this report for informational and planning purposes.
