State Register of Historic Places 2016

From the Preface: "The State Register of Historic Places was created in 1982 to enhance the Massachusetts Historical Commission's ability to identify, evaluate, and protect the Commonwealth's historic and archaeological resources. The State Register creates a single, easy-to-use master list of properties designated under several specific local, state, and federal statutes. It supports a comprehensive and timely system of review for state governmental bodies whose actions may affect designated properties, providing a clear framework to ensure that the Commonwealth's cultural heritage is not inadvertently damaged by public action. ...State Register listings are arranged by municipality. Within each city or town, properties are arranged alphabetically by their historic name. Properties named after people are listed with the surname first (i.c. Smith, John House). Properties known only by their address are arranged alphabetically by the street name with the street number following. Specific location information is not provided for archaeological sites to protect them from possible harm. Following the name and location information are the designation type and date, and the number of properties or resources included in the designation. Many listings include multiple designations. For properties and districts with multiple designations, the boundaries of each designation sometimes differ. The 'Center Village Historic District' may be the official name of both a National Register district and a local historic district that overlap but have different boundaries. In such a case, the 'Center Village Historic District' is listed twice, with each listing including a different designation, date, boundary description and property count. Properties that have individual designations and also fall within historic districts appear with both their individual and district designations. For districts, a listing appears only for the district as a whole. Please note that the State Register does not include address listings of individual properties located within designated historic districts."
