Abstract: "The project object was to complete a reconnaissance level architectural survey of Downtown Madison, South Dakota. The project was undertaken by the South Dakota Department of Education, Division of History and was administered by the South Dakota State Historic Preservation Office, with Elizabeth Almlie serving as the project manager for the State. The survey objective was to gather reconnaissance level information and digital photography obtained from the public right of way within a set boundary in Downtown Madison. There are potentially 39 structures contributing a historic district and 16 structures individually eligible to be listed in the National Register of Historic Places. There are two structures currently listed in the National Register, both of which may also be contributing to a historic district. The survey is believed to have met the objectives of a reconnaissance level survey, providing the State with the necessary information to direct future preservation efforts and potential listings within the survey area to the National Register." Project funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the South Dakota State Historical Society, administered by State, Tribal, Local Plans and Grants division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior (grant number P17AF00031).
