Reconnaissance Level Architectural Survey - Moody County, South Dakota

Introduction: "This report details a reconnaissance-level architectural survey of Moody County, South Dakota conducted by Common Bond Preservation (CBP) for the South Dakota State Historic Office (SHPO) of the South Dakota Sate Historical Society. The goal of the project was to gain an understanding of the architectural resources of the entire county through windshield survey. The survey focused on identifying properties eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. The information gathered will assist the SD SHPO in their efforts to protect the valuable historic resources of South Dakota and facilitate the Section 106 process. The project team consisted of Shannon L. Papin of CBP, who was responsible for survey fieldwork, research and the preparation of the survey report. Unfortunately, team member Kristen Reynolds was forced to drop out due to family medical issues, although she did assist with editing. Both Ms. Papin and Ms. Reynolds meet or exceed the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards for Historians. The survey was conducted following the guidelines outlines in the South Dakota Historical Resource Survey Manual. Fieldwork was completed between August 27 and September 8, 2017 and October 25-31, 2017. Eighty-eight buildings within the county had previously been surveyed; seventy-nine of them more than five years ago. Additionally, fifty-five bridges and one cemetery had been previously surveyed, all more than five years ago. Thirteen structures in Moody County are listed on the State or National Register of Historic Places, including the Crystal Theatre, the George Few House, the Masonic Temple, The Japanese Garden Dance Pavilion, the Moody County Courthouse, and the Pettigrew Barn, all in Flandreau, and the city park and a bridge in Egan. Rural listings include a bridge in River View Township, a bridge near Lake Campbell, the First Scandinavian Baptist near Treat and the Little Village Farm Sale Barn near Dell Rapids. Ms. Papin traversed every public road in the county and surveyed every accessible property that appeared to be eligible for the National Register, with historic significance and architectural integrity intact. All survey information was entered into the database of the South Dakota State Historical Society. Copies of all survey forms, including site drawings, were printed on archival paper and are housed at the South Dakota State Historical Society. Original field notes were kept by CBP."
