A National Register of Historic Places Registration Form for the Perkins Leyden Congregational Church. Narrative Description Summary Paragraph: "The Perkins Leyden Congregational Church is in a rural setting in Springfield, South Dakota. Originally, the Church was within the hamlet of Perkins, which has since been unincorporated. The Church is a single-story, wood-framed building with a gable roof and spire, constructed in 1901 in the Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals/Late Gothic Revival. The Church has retained many of its original features such as the white painted wood clapboard siding, low steeple tower with a modest spire, lancet windows, and non-connected privy at the rear of the structure. Several exterior alterations are apparent throughout, such as the salt box stairway addition at the front of the building and several sets of concrete steps. Springfield, South Dakota is located on the Missouri River in the southeast portion of the state. The Church is located approximately four miles from downtown Springfield. The rural setting of the church is provided by expansive farmland to the west and south sides of the property. To the north and south area small homesteads, both of which are flanked by expansive farmland. The Church has retained much of its interior and exterior architectural integrity in its overall form, materials, and features." Statement of Significance Summary Paragraph: "The Perkins Leyden Congregation meets National Register of Historic Places Criterion C in the area of Architecture for local significance, as the building excellently represents rural and early development churches constructed in the late Gothic Revival style in Bon Homme County. The period of significance occurred in 1901 when the church completed construction."
