Ruins Stabilization Report: Stabilization Monitoring at Canyonlands National Park and Natural Bridges National Monument, A Review of the 1983-1986 Work

As part of the Year 4 stabilization activities in Canyonlands National Park (CANY) and Natural Bridges National Monument (NABR), presservation monitoring was conducted by the Nickens and Associates' stabilization crew at the 4 sites stabilized under CX-1200-2-B103 (Metzger 1983) and the 15 sites stabilized under the current contract CX-1200-3- A089 (Metzger et al. 1985b; Metzger and Chandler 1986; Eininger et al. 1986; and Firor 1986a). Monitoring inspections were conducted in April and May 1987 at the following sites: Sites Stabilized in 1983 under CX-1200-2-B103 Four Faces Ruin/42SA1629 All American Man Ruin/42SA1614 Picto-Petro Man Ruin/42SA1638 42SA1628 Sites Stabilized in 1984 under CX-1200-3-A089 — Year 1 Paul Bunyan's Potty/42SA1374 Tower Ruin/42SA1470 Whitewash Ruin/42SA1491 Horsecollar Ruin/42SA6819-42SA6820 Lightning House Ruin/42SA6967 Kachina Bridge Ruin/42SA6801 Sites Stabilized in 1985 under CX-1200-3-A089 — Year 2 Bighorn Sheep Ruin/42SA1563 Bare Ladder Ruin/42SA6965 Sipapu Bridge Trail Ruin/42SA16751 Sites Stabilized in 1986 under CX-1200-3-A089 — Year 3 Big Ruin/42SA1586 42SA6802 Defensive Wall/42SA6803 42SA6804 Perfect Granary/42SA678 All of these sites except those stabilized as part of the Year 3 work were inspected by Nickens and Associates in the spring of 1986 (Firor 1986b). Brief monitoring tours were also conducted in the spring of 1985 by Todd R. Metzger, Adrienne Anderson, and other NPS personnel. Results of this inspection are briefly documented in a report prepared for the National Park Service (NPS), Rocky Mountain Regional Office, Denver (Metzger 1985). The purpose of the monitoring inspections was (1) to evaluate the effectiveness of the stabilization repairs performed at each site, (2) to document the types and rates of deterioration, and (3) to justify the need for patrols, cyclic maintenance, public education, and other preservation measures. The technical and descriptive data resulting from this and previous monitoring inspections will also be interpreted and summarized in the forthcoming synthetic report on the CX-1200-3-A089 ruins stabilization activities in CANY and NABR.
