A bibliography and review of the published literature on the conservation of carbonate rocks-namely marbles and limestones-was prepared by the Architectural Conservation Laboratory of the University of Pennsylvania as the first part of a multi-phased program focused on the preservation and maintenance of the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. This research was designed to provide a much-needed bibliographic database of relevant technical information published over the past 25 years on the methods, materials, and techniques for the conservation of marble and limestone and on treatment evaluation and monitoring for stone conservation in general. The resultant bibliography and literature assessment have been compiled to provide the necessary background information to guide and inform the ultimate design of a conservation treatment testing and assessment program for the stone masonry of the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. An annotated bibliography of approximately 413 entries was prepared from a large body of internationally published literature on the subject. Sources consulted included: on-line information networks; books on conservation, geology, and related topics; periodicals and professional journals; published government reports; and conference reports and proceedings (see SOURCES CONSULTED, below). Bibliographies of publications were also used to find additional sources. A publication had to satisfy the following criteria to be included in the Bibliography and Technical Literature Survey: (1) written within the last 25 years; (2) related specifically to marbles and limestones; exceptions being articles on overall model methodologies for any stone covering all conservation processes-documentation, examination, analysis, diagnostics, testing, treatment; and (3) treatment-oriented (excluding purely theoretical material on decay mechanisms) or focused on treatment evaluation and monitoring, regardless of stone type. The bibliography was researched and arranged according to treatment categories applicable to stone and in association with the observed and recorded conditions surveyed at both monuments. These categories included: cleaning, consolidation and surface protection, mechanical repair, and treatment testing and monitoring. For each publication, detailed annotations were prepared utilizing a literature assessment questionnaire (see sheet below, STONE CONSERVATION LITERATURE ASSESSMENT) designed for the project to direct and standardize the essential bibliographic data and information extracted by each researcher. From these sheets the information was entered into Pro-Cite 2.2.1, a bibliographic database, by research category. The standard Pro-Cite formats for articles, books, conference proceedings, etc., were used, filling in all available information for standard fields. Entries are arranged alphabetically by author(s) per category and numbered sequentially throughout the entire bibliography in its printed form. Each entry includes a bibliographic citation, abstract, rank, and key words. Some sources were cited in more than one category but with different abstracts depending on the relevance to the category.
