Currently a multi-million dollar, multi-year preservation project is underway at the Lincoln Memorial. During this project, large portions of the Lincoln Memorial will not be available for visitation and scaffolding will interrupt the clear viewing of the memorial. Because the Lincoln Memorial is such an important memorial in terms of scenic presence on the Mall and in terms of visitor popularity, the National Park Service is proceeding with a simple and low-cost method of presenting this work to the general public. This presentation will be in the form of black-and-white xerox-able handouts on 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper; 4 foot by 8 foot panels mounted near the construction fence; and a video monitor showing roughly edited views of the preservation work. The National Park Service is presenting this preservation work to the general public as part of the Service's mission to interpret cultural resources to the general public. It is the hope of the National Park Service that the public, once educated to the importance of this preservation work, will be more tolerant of the inconvenience of this preservation work and may better appreciate the care required to maintain historic places.
