These measurements of upward radiance can be used to better understand sky quality and the impacts of light pollution but should not be used as an absolute measure. There are many caveats with satellite data. For examples the VIIRS satellite cannot measure some short wavelength light meaning that some lighting retrofits that cause increased light pollution on the landscape that have increased blue spectral content may show up as an improvement on the VIIRS data. Alaska cannot get accurate measurements from VIIRS satellite data because the Aurora Borealis and snow on the ground inaccurately increases values.
