Roof for the Old Stone House
Fisher C. 1974. Roof for the Old Stone House. Historic Structure Report. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service
This memorandum concerns the roof for the Old Stone House at Rock Creek Park. The author found that the sections of the roof preserved by the construction of the storage shed offers the only concrete evidence which can be used in determining the style of roof on the Old Stone House during the eighteenth century. Physical evidence suggests that one or both of the styles of shingles were employed as early as the eighteenth century though they might not represent the earliest roof. After considering various alternatives, the author recommends that the new roof proposed for the Old Stone House be patterned on data obtained from the preserved sections of the roof.
