Located in the Fisherman's Wharf neighborhood, San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park offers visitors the sights, sounds, smells and stories of Pacific Coast maritime history. The Park includes a fleet of historic ships, a Visitor Center, Maritime Museum, Maritime Research Center, and Aquatic Park Historic District. This document details a scientific survey of the steam schooner Wapama preceding restoration. The results of the survey show taht the vessel has effectively failed amidships with the accompanying characteristics of the buckled bottom structure and the fractured main deck structural members. Vessels who have failed longitudinally continue to deflect until the strain energy equals the remaining stress energy. If this point of equalization does not occur for a timber vessel within the elastic limits of the effective structure, the vessel will literally break. At the time of the report, there is enough structure remaining of the Wapama's hull to prevent this.
