Located in the Fisherman's Wharf neighborhood, San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park offers visitors the sights, sounds, smells and stories of Pacific Coast maritime history. The Park includes a fleet of historic ships, a Visitor Center, Maritime Museum, Maritime Research Center, and Aquatic Park Historic District. The major elements in the Historic Ships Preservation Program are: I. The vessels C. A. Thayer, Wapama, Eureka, Hercules, Alma, Balclutha, Eppleton Hall, structures on the Hyde Street Pier, and the Jeremiah O'Brien (with provision in GMP for up to five more vessels). II. New docks and sheltered mooring for protection, maintenance, and interpretation in the natural shelter of Aquatic Park Lagoon, with Corps of Engineers breakwater, repair of Municipal Pier and dredging the lagoon. III. New facilities, a preservation shipyard with 3,000 ton capacity floating dry dock, and work shops (25,000 square feet) including timber storage yard, saw mill, carpentry shops, blacksmith/machine shoo. (Part of which may not be located within existing park boundaries.) IV. An expanded staff of maritime craftsmen, including shipwrights (marine carpenters) to repair and preserve the structure of the ships, riggers to the rigging and sails, and deckhands to maintain the decks, hulls, boats and machinery, service utility systems and stand night watches to protect the ships. Also a boatwright to carry out small boat repair and a mechanic to maintain marine and automotive machinery. V. Interpretation of ships and maritime history. On site exhibits, by-word tours, Environmental Living Program, guided tours, demonstrations, slide presentations, movies, special programs, and special events.
