"The City of Frankfort has a rich history that is reflected in its diverse collection of buildings, structures, and landscapes. These irreplaceable resources define the character of our community and serve as visual anchors that provide a link to our past. The City of Frankfort recognizes the power of such places in defining our unique community identity and encourages their preservation and use. Through the office of Planning and Community Development, the City of Frankfort has established preservation planning programs and processes while routinely working with organizations and private property owners to meet the goal of preserving, protecting, and celebrating our historic places. Recognizing the City's commitment to historic preservation, the City has been designated as a Certified Local Government (CLG) by the Kentucky Heritage Council (KHC) and the National Park Service (NPS), linking it to communities throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky that share the goal of protecting local history. The City has adopted a Historic Preservation Ordinance as well as Design Guidelines and utilizes an Architectural Review Board with both administrative and Board approvals for Certificates of Appropriateness on exterior changes to buildings, demotions, and new construction within these districts. At the core, historic preservation is about more than practicing individual pieces of our history. When embraced and integrated into broader community development processes, preservation becomes a valuable tool in enhancing neighborhoods, promoting cultural identity, leveraging cultural goods as economic resources, and supporting responsible growth. Certainly, when we recognize the importance of our heritage in defining the unique identity of our community and promote responsible stewardship of our community assets, historic places become more than isolated keepsakes of our past. They become assets that contribute to the long-term stability and economic and cultural vitality of our community."
