Near the entrance to the Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site stands the Rafferty House, a two-story frame structure built in the 1860s. The purpose of this abbreviated Historic Structures Report is to document the date the house was built, to discuss the history of the house under the National Park Service, and to make a recommendation as to its disposition. A Class C investigation was initiated because of the lack of any apparent historical or architectural significance of the structure. Considering the lack of any historical significance to the house, its continuing protection problem, and its present condition which seems to prohibit any use of the structure, the park recommends that the structure be razed and the site leveled. Not only would this remove a visual intrusion at the Park entrance, but would also remove a potential hazard to either vandals or fire fighters if another fire is set.
