This vegetation treatment and preservation maintenance plan for Glacier Bay Lodge Complex Historic District documents existing vegetation conditions, design intent, treatment objectives, and maintenance recommendations. The vegetation management plan can serve as a resource to design and implement landscape maintenance operations within the historic district. Glacier Bay Lodge Complex Historic District is located in southeast Alaska, 6.5 miles to the northwest of Gustavus. The lodge and 16 associated multi-unit cabins sit on the south shore of Bartlett Cove near the entrance to Glacier Bay within the boundaries of Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. Although the lodge was first proposed in 1945, the project was not realized until former National Park Service Director Conrad Wirth’s Mission 66 park development program. The lodge construction began in 1965 and it was opened in June of 1966. The site is located in a temperate rainforest on a glacial moraine, and site features were designed with consideration to the climate and surrounding environment. A planting plan called for planting a combination of spruce, alder, blueberry, salmonberry, and currants around the lodge and original eight cabins. Although the extent of the implementation of the planting design is unknown because landscape construction documents have not been archived, the planting plan informs the character objectives and treatment recommendations in this document. Vegetation management at the Glacier Bay Lodge Complex consists of the two following components: Rehabilitation Treatment and Preservation Maintenance. The treatment and preservation maintenance plan recommends actions in specific zones to address landscape character objectives and provide a clear outline for work planning.
