City of Shelby Historic Preservation Plan: 2019-2025

2019. City of Shelby Historic Preservation Plan: 2019-2025. Ohio History Connection; City of Shelby, Ohio; Perspectus Historic Architecture, Chambers, Murphy & Burge Studio

From the Introduction: "Historic preservation is a particularly relevant practice to the contemporary lifestyle, and it is gaining popularity. Stephanie Meeks, CEO of the National Trust for Historic Preservation explains, '...as millennials and empty nester move back into cities, they're flocking to neighborhoods with historic buildings. People want more authenticity in their lives...and in the kind of places they live. That's the kind of authenticity that historic buildings can bring to a city.' Studies have shown that shoppers and diners, specifically of millennial generation, prefer to patronize historic downtowns; historic travel is also appealing to this generation. People want to spend time in places that retain historic fabric and tell a story. The City of Shelby realizes this opportunity and seeks to celebrate its own unique historic character and tell its own story. The City of Shelby is full of rich and unique history that serves as an asset to its community. The remaining historic integrity within the city strongly serves as a part of the community's identity and should be preserved to ensure future growth. Perspectus Historic Architecture, with input from Shelby stakeholders, has established the following sections in the Historic Preservation Plan: 1. Introduction; 2. Context and History of the City of Shelby; 3. Preservation Philosophy; 4. Integrating Preservation with existing City of Shelby Tools and Processes; 5. Prioritized Actions; 6. List of Resources; and 7. Appendix." Project funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the Ohio History Connection administered by the State, Tribal, Local Plans and Grants division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior (grant number P18AF00011).
