Bell Buckle Historic Commission Design Standards

From the Purpose & Intent: "The purpose of the Bell Buckle Design Guidelines is to provide direction for the preservation, conservation, restoration, and rehabilitation of historically and architecturally significant buildings in the Downtown C-1 Historic District of the Town of Bell Buckle. Design guidelines assist property owners in maintaining and enhancing the appearance of their properties, keep up property values, and improve the livability of historic areas. Design guidelines help property owners understand the value and methods of preserving and maintaining the essential character of their property and methods for preservation and appropriate maintenance. The Bell Buckle Historic District was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 and the district includes all of the commercial buildings facing Railroad Square. Listing in the National Register is an honorary designation and does not require design review or impose any requirements on property owners. Since 1976, the Town of Bell Buckle and its citizens have recognized that the historic buildings are assets to the community and have made historic preservation a basic approach to economic development and tourism. ...These Guidelines have been crafted to maintain the historic integrity of the original architecture of the buildings in the historic district. The Guidelines outline standard and best practices involved in adapting historic buildings to modern needs. The Guidelines allow for change when it is carried out in a sensitive manner that maintains the special character of the historic district while meeting the practical needs of the residents and property owners. The Commission works to ensure that the rights of property owners are recognized and respected, and full use of private property is guaranteed within the bounds of these Guidelines. The Guidelines assist the Commission, staff, and property owners in making appropriate determinations regarding maintaining and preserving historically historic properties within the designated historic district. The Guidelines provide commonly accepted principles and methods for the maintenance and preservation of exterior materials, features, and site elements such as landscaping, streetscape elements, streets, and other outside features."
