From the brochure: "A lack of preparedness can lead to the damage or inadvertent loss of historic sites, buildings and structures. Many times people don't recognize the importance of historic properties until they are gone. Historic properties and cultural resources are valuable economic assets that increase property values and attract businesses and tourists. A single disaster in a historic community can destroy its identity and economic vitality. The most recent damage incurred by Tropic Storm Michael in October 2018 is evidence of the need for preparedness. Tropical Storm Michael brought flash flooding with up to four (4) feet of water in some areas and wind gusts up to 40 mph. Our historic structures suffered structural damage due to collapsed trees, flooded basements and failed gutter systems...." Project funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the Virginia Department of Historic Resources administered by the State, Tribal, Local Plans and Grants division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior (grant number P18AF00023).
