OPENING PARAGRAPH: The Nature Conservancy conducted a survey under NPS research permit in front country campgrounds in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GRSM) in the fall of 2016, 2017, and 2018. Questions from this survey were selected in this summary to prioritize information for park managers. Data was consistent over the three-year survey window, indicating reliable results to guide future efforts in regulating firewood movement. Survey results indicate the park’s message on risks to our forests from moving firewood has reached visitors. The survey also provides information on sources of firewood brought to park frontcountry campgrounds. This survey did not include backcountry sites in the park or nearby private campgrounds. One park staff member reported seeing a backcountry hiker hauling in a cartload of heat-treated wood to a backcountry campsite. This individual wanted a campfire and was concerned the wood available in the park would be too wet.
