Introduction: "Alexander B. Mahood significantly altered the landscape and built environment of the West Virginia mountains during the early to mid-twentieth century. After completing a formal education in architecture, Mahood moved to Bluefield, West Virginia and brought his skills in classical and revival styles with him. Increased economic growth in the region during his early years of business provided Mahood with opportunity to design high-style buildings for a variety of uses. As time marched on, his styles adapted to changing trends in architectural design. He surpassed several of his contemporaries, winning hundreds of bids to design for coal companies, private residences, city buildings, and college campuses." Project funding was provided by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the West Virginia State Historic Preservation Office, Department of Arts, Culture, and History, administered by the State, Tribal, Local Plans and Grants division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior (grant number P18AF00021).
