Foreword by Susan M. Pierce, Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer: "When I was young, my father read to me at bedtime and our family often visited the local library. He would return home with stacks of books which would sit in a row near the fireplace. When finished, we returned to the library for more books. Henry Louis Gates Jr. admits in Colored People: A Memoir that he 'stayed up most of the night reading that book, and I was sorry when I became so sleepy I couldn't read anymore.' I know how he feels; I still try to finish each day with a bit of reading. Pearl S. Buck wrote that her mother's house in Pocahontas County was 'a gateway to new thoughts and dreams and ways of life.' West Virginia left its imprint on Buck and the places of our state can impact us too. The 2019 West Virginia Historic Preservation Calendar highlights some of the historic places that have inspired writers.
