The assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968 was a pivotal time in the history of the United States. Some neighborhoods experienced a completed decimation of their businesses as a result. Although not as extensive as some, the small business community in Deanwood saw upheaval. Small businesses have continuously uplifted the historically black community of Deanwood. Alice Chandler and Deborah Jones detail the rich history of small black and Jewish-owned businesses in Deanwood after 1968. This project emphasized the business' physical structure, owners, and consumers who patronized them during the 1968 period. Project funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the District of Columbia Historic Preservation Office, Office of Planning, administered by the State, Tribal, Local Plans and Grants division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior (grant number P17AF00101).
