"Little has been written about defensive works the Puerta de Tierra neighborhood. This book wants to provide a narrative about the rise and decline of the fortifications from the sixteenth century to the day in a story between Puerta de Santiago (also known as Puerta de Tierra) of the city of San Juan and the San Antonio bridge. The publication seeks to recover from oblivion the remnants of the fortification built in Puerta de Tierra by the Spanish military. At their peak, they were part of an ancient system of three lines that had two purposes: first, control the entrance of barges through the Caño San Antonio towards the Bay of San Juan; and second, delay the advance by land of an invading force towards the city of San Juan."
