Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site is a historic house museum in Hyde Park, New York. It became a National Historic Landmark in 1940. It is owned and operated by the National Park Service. This report is made as a result of a visit to the Vanderbilt Masion area, extending from July 22 through August 11, 1940. During this period, as reported on previously in detailed job-status reports, the project was honored by a visit (July 23) from the President, who offered several positive opinions regarding development and operation. The Mansion and grounds were opened to the public (July 30), and a CCC cadre was installed (August 5). In view of these circumstances and in the interest of advancing the project during its formative stage, the author extended his activities somewhat beyond the original technical limitations of the assignment by offering whatever advice and assistance his previous experience allowed to the Superintendent in the initiation of proper Service procedure and contact and in setting up and directing a temporary, technical work program for the CCC detail to follow.
