Historic Structures Report, Part I, Architectural Data: Reef Bay Great House

Gjessing FC. 1968. Historic Structures Report, Part I, Architectural Data: Reef Bay Great House. Historic Structure Report. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Office of Archeology and Historic Preservation. Washington, D.C.

The Virgin Islands National Park is an American national park preserving about 60% of the land area of Saint John in the United States Virgin Islands, as well as more than 5,500 acres (2,226 ha; 9 sq mi) of adjacent ocean, and nearly all of Hassel Island, just off the Charlotte Amalie, Saint Thomas harbor. This Historic Structures Report concerns the Reef Bay Great House. Reef Bay Great House is the name affixed to the structure that served as the residence of the former owner of Par Force and Reef Bay Estates. In addition to the main building, that housed the actual bed and living rooms of the owner, there are four service buildings, the cook house, the servants quarter, a stable and an outbuilding. A program of repair and stabilization is suggested for all remaining walls and in the case of the main house correction of the structural failure of the masonry, reroofing and enclosing of the interior to prevent further deterioration. The work should not be in terms of a restoration and the new roof should not be a replacement of the existing one in terms of materials and construction details. Where still salvageable, the original roof should be shored up and the new roof constructed above it but below the parapet walls to retain the original profile and character of the building. It is also suggested that all floors and interior woodwork be removed and exterior shutters and doors be repaired or replaced where necessary that the shell of the building can be secured and protected against weather and vandalism and the interior held against further deterioration.
