Evaluation of the Old Headquarters Cabin, Walnut Canyon National Monument

Walnut Canyon National Monument (Hopi: Wupatupqa) is a United States National Monument located about 10 mi (16 km) southeast of downtown Flagstaff, Arizona, near Interstate 40. The National Park Service has advanced a Natural and Cultural Resources Management Plan with Environmental Assessment for Walnut Canyon National Monument (December, 1975), Within this Plan restoration of the old headquarters and museum cabin is discussed. In addition to the initiation of restoration work, a Historic Structures Report is called for; however, this evaluation report will serve as a preliminary compilation of materials anticipating a further detailed Historic Structures Report. The subject structure was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 31, 1975, and nomination forms were completed by Historian Ross Holland in April, 1972. To comply with Congressional Acts, Executive Order 11593, Park Service Directors' memoranda, and NPS Management Policy statements of 1975 and to provide information to guide future actions, this report has been compiled by the Division of Historic Preservation, Western Region, National Park Service. Although the structure has been informally proposed for restoration variously as an interpretative museum to commemorate northern Arizona pioneers, for stabilization as a park storage facility, or removed because of poor condition, no detailed professional architectural, archaeological, and historical evaluations have been undertaken to provide preliminary data.
